Kenya is dealing with the consequences of very serious flooding. The children in our project in Thika in Kenya have also been affected. The children and families were already living in poverty, but now they have nothing left. This emergency makes children extremely vulnerable to exploitation.
Kenya is facing a worsening flood crisis due to the combined effects of El Nino and the ongoing long rains according to the secretary General and CEO of International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC).
As of Thursday, 9th, May 2024, 257 people had been killed and 293,000 others displaced in 31 out of Kenya's 47 counties.
The rains were predicted to continue for several weeks. The Kenya Red Cross reported that 101 schools had been destroyed by the rains.
There has been a significant impact of the heavy rains on communities leading to loss of lives, destruction of properties and infrastructure in many parts across the country. Thika Sub county where the Time to Play project is implemented has not been spared either.
Most residents, especially those in the informal settlements in Kiandutu, Majengo and Athena were displaced, lost cooking utensils, blankets, mattresses and other household items, whereas the children lost their scholastic materials (school uniforms, exercise books and pens). It has been noted that most childrendid not reported back to school as result of the floods effects on their families.
To facilitate immediate relief and support to children and their families affected by the floods in the informal settlement in Thika Sub county. It is also aimed at preventing children from exploitation.
The actions will be implemented for 6 months by the Terre des Hommes Netherlands partner with technical support of the Terre des Hommes Humanitarian Aid expert.
